Group Course 2011

From Russia to Scunthorpe for premier learning experience

June 2011

New faces have been appearing in classes at John Leggott College as ten young people from Russia have made the trip to North Lincolnshire for a two-week learning experience.

The group, aged between 13 and 17, have been given the opportunity to participate in lessons at the College, improve their English language skills and visit local tourist attractions during the trip which is designed to showcase the College’s excellence in international education.

John Leggott College Deputy Principal (Student Support and Recruitment) Alison Burtle said: “Moving to the UK for two years of college study is a big commitment and so this two-week taster course enabled the Russian students to sample UK education before enrolling onto a full college programme.

“It is the first time we have offered such a programme and we believe that diversifying the international learning experiences John Leggott College has to offer will enable us to generate more interest from prospective international students.

“We hope that this small initial group of visitors will go home and tell others about their experience so that we can continue to spread the word about the quality educational experience at John Leggott College.”

The students have stayed with JLC staff and, as well as finding out more about the town, have visited places including York and Scarborough.

Russian student Julia Vedernikova said the visit helped to improve her understanding of English.

“The taster course was very helpful for our English level. I will come back to JLC again, of course I want to see the same teachers and learn many interesting things.”

The students were integrated into classes full of local John Leggott College students and were also able to make new friends and spend time socialising.

“I liked visiting other towns and visiting different, interesting subjects and communicating with other international pupils,” fellow visitor Bogdan Yakovlev added.

In the current academic year the College has had six students from Russia studying on full-time courses in subjects including maths, economics, media studies and sociology.
